Whitechapel is a district in East London, England. It is the future administrative centre of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Whitechapel is a part of East End of London and is located 5.5 km towards east of Charing Cross, London. This district was a part of Stepney – an ancient parish in Middlesex.
In 14th century, Whitechapel split of as a separate parish and became a part of the London County in 1889. Later in 1965, it became a part of Greater London. This place has been a popular place for working class and immigrants because of its location which is close to the London Docklands and lies east of City of London. In 19th century, Whitechapel was the centre of the London’s Jewish community and in early 20th century as well.
It is a place of infamous 11 Whitechapel murders, some of which were ascribed as mysterious serial killers such as Jack the Ripper. Later in the 20th century, the Whitechapel district became a significant settlement for the British Bangladeshi community. It also has the East London Mosque and Royal London Hospital.
